A 34-year-old woman drove a pickup truck through a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, killing two people and injuring 11 others, police said.
The two people killed were a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, who were not related to each other, Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses said. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident happened at the Stryker Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. Sedgwick County 911 received multiple calls around 3:25 p.m. local time reporting that a vehicle had driven through a soccer game, Moses said at a press conference.
A witness told local station KWCH that a black pickup truck drove through the youth fields, striking several people before coming to a stop about 100 to 200 yards further down the field.
Eleven people, aged between five and 68, were taken to local hospitals. Police said five of them were children and six were adults. Ten suffered traumatic injuries ranging from bruises to extremely severe injuries, while a 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for an unknown medical condition. Police said all the injuries were believed to be non-life threatening.
Officers found the truck on the field with the driver still at the vehicle. Police identified her as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas. Two juveniles were inside the truck with her. She is in police custody and has been cooperating with the investigation, Moses said. Her own child had been playing soccer on a different field at the complex.
Wichita police officers, other local agencies, the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County EMS responded to the scene. Before first responders arrived, people at the complex began giving lifesaving aid to the victims. Police Chief Joe Sullivan praised the community response, calling it amazing.
Police have not determined how fast the vehicle was travelling or how it got onto the field, and have not said whether they believe the incident was intentional. The sports complex has surveillance video and its owners are cooperating with investigators, police said. Authorities said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Mayor Lily Wu called the news heartbreaking and said her thoughts and prayers were with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved. Police said they would provide further updates when more information became available.
