A 49-year-old man died of a self-inflicted gunshot at a million-dollar home in the Palisades neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C., after D.C. police responded to a reported burglary at the address.
The man was identified as Mostafa Khermiche, 49. The shooting occurred at a home on 48th Street Northwest, where neighbors said a suspected squatter, a woman and her 8-year-old daughter, had been living since June without the owner’s permission.
Neighbors said the woman had been invited inside by someone doing construction work while the overseas owner prepared to sell the property. The woman was reportedly livestreaming when the shooting happened.
According to court records, Khermiche had a court appearance two days earlier on a felony domestic violence charge documented as an assault on a police officer.
The home has been the subject of repeated disturbances. Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner J.P. Szymkowicz said police received more than 25 calls for service at the location since June, including a separate shooting reported earlier in the week, and expressed frustration over delays in resolving the situation through the legal system.
Neighbors said they feared retaliation and declined to speak on camera.
FOX 5 DC reported the details of the incident.
