A woman has been charged after gunfire wounded three people outside a Georgia high school on Saturday evening, following the school’s homecoming game.

Aiyana Lane is accused of three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, third-degree cruelty to children, and carrying weapons within a school safety zone, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the parking lot of Lucy C. Laney High School on Laney-Walker Boulevard in Augusta at about 6:05 p.m. after reports that several people had been struck by gunfire.

Investigators say Lane had been in a physical confrontation with another woman that bystanders broke up. She then produced a firearm and fired at least one shot toward the other woman, the sheriff’s office said.

The three people hit were taken to area hospitals with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Only adults were involved, the Richmond County School System said, adding that all students, athletes, cheerleaders and band members taking part in homecoming activities were safe and accounted for.

A school system police officer was also injured while responding to a separate altercation nearby and is said to be doing well. The investigation is ongoing.

The story was first reported by the Augusta Chronicle.
