A 47-year-old woman from Tahoka was killed Sunday evening when her SUV was struck by a pickup truck that ran a stop sign at a rural intersection in Lubbock County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Elizabeth Metcalf was driving a 2019 Ford Escape westbound on FM 1585 at about 6:38 p.m. when a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado pickup heading north on County Road 3100 failed to yield at the stop sign and entered the intersection, investigators said. The junction sits roughly halfway between Lubbock and Slaton.
Metcalf took action to avoid the collision but struck the passenger side of the pickup, the DPS said. Both vehicles came to rest in a field northwest of the intersection.
Metcalf, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries. The driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries. The speed limit on that stretch is 75 miles per hour, and the weather was clear with dry roads at the time, the DPS said.
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported the DPS findings on Monday, when the department issued its news release on the crash. The investigation continues.
