A K9 patrol vehicle from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a two-vehicle crash late Friday night on Syracuse’s North Side, striking a civilian car at the intersection of Park Street and Hiawatha Boulevard.
The crash happened just after 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16. The deputy driving the K9 vehicle was heading south on Park Street, following a vehicle that matched the description of one connected to a shots-fired call in Syracuse about 15 minutes earlier, the sheriff’s office said.
The deputy was not pursuing the other vehicle, and the patrol car’s emergency lights were not on. When the deputy turned east onto Hiawatha Boulevard to keep following the suspect vehicle, another vehicle heading north on Park Street entered the intersection at the same time, and the patrol car struck it, sheriff’s office spokesperson Deputy Doug Roser said.
No injuries were reported in the crash. The civilian driver first declined medical treatment but was then taken to a hospital as a precaution. The names of the deputy and the other driver have not been released because the investigation is still underway.
The crash remains under investigation, and no tickets have been issued.
It is the third crash this month involving an Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle. On Oct. 4, a deputy’s patrol car was in a two-vehicle crash on West Seneca Turnpike in Syracuse’s Valley neighborhood, with no injuries. On Oct. 9, a deputy was taken to the hospital after his patrol car was hit from behind on Interstate 481 in Clay while he was stopped to help a dump truck that had broken down. That deputy was later released from the hospital.
