A woman struck by a car on Route 17 in Paramus, New Jersey, has died of her injuries, police confirmed on October 20.

The victim, a 32-year-old woman whose name has not been released, was hit near Garden State Plaza at about 5:10 p.m. on October 19, according to Paramus police and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti confirmed to NorthJersey.com on the morning of October 20 that she had died.

All southbound lanes of Route 17 near the mall were closed for hours during the accident investigation, and traffic was diverted to Route 4, the New Jersey Department of Transportation said.

A New York man now faces multiple charges, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by NorthJersey.com. Estuardo Rodriguez, 31, of Tarrytown, New York, was driving a 2024 Acura ZDX and towing a U-Haul trailer south on Route 17 when it was involved in a crash with a 2015 Buick Enclave, the affidavit states.

When Rodriguez tried to leave the scene, the front passenger of the Buick, identified in the affidavit only by initials, got out of the vehicle, approached the Acura and struck it several times. The affidavit says Rodriguez then accelerated, striking the woman with his vehicle. She was then run over by the U-Haul trailer.

Rodriguez drove off and turned onto the Garden State Plaza site road, where he was stopped by civilians about half a mile from the scene, according to the affidavit. Paramus police arrived shortly after.

While speaking with Rodriguez, the affidavit says, officers detected an odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath. They also observed his eyes to be bloodshot and his pupils pinpointed.

Guidetti deferred further comment to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. NorthJersey.com said it had reached out to a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office for more information.
