A 59-year-old attorney from Morton, Illinois, has been charged in connection with a wrong-way crash on Interstate 74 that killed a motorcyclist earlier this month, WEEK 25 News Now reported.

Ronald W. Hasinger remains held in the Woodford County Jail after Judge Gregory Minger ordered him detained ahead of trial. Prosecutors allege Hasinger drove his sport utility vehicle the wrong way and struck a motorcycle head-on in the eastbound lanes of I-74, between Goodfield and Carlock.

The crash was reported about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10. The motorcyclist, 24-year-old Jhony Francisco Tellez Enamorado of Bloomington, was pronounced dead at the scene about 3 a.m., Woodford County Coroner Tim Ruestman said. Tellez Enamorado was a citizen of Guatemala.

Hasinger faces felony charges of aggravated driving under the influence and aggravated reckless driving. He is also charged with DUI, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, failing to reduce speed and improper lane usage.

Defense attorney Kevin Sullivan, who says he has known Hasinger for 30 to 35 years, told 25News the allegations are inconsistent with the man he knows, describing Hasinger as affable and a competent attorney specializing in labor law. Sullivan said whether he appeals the detention order will depend on what was in Hasinger’s system at the time of the crash.

Hasinger was treated at a local hospital for injuries before being taken into custody, Sullivan said. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 10.
