Two people were killed and a third was injured in a head-on crash on Interstate 680 in Concord, California, early Monday morning after a driver went the wrong way on the freeway, according to California Highway Patrol incident logs.
The crash happened around 1:50 a.m. on the northbound side of I-680 at the Willow Pass Road on-ramp. Callers reported a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes with its headlights off. The wrong-way vehicle then collided head-on with an oncoming car. The vehicles were described as a black Lexus sedan and another black four-door sedan, and one car was left sideways across the lanes near the Lazy Dog restaurant.
Fire crews had to extricate victims from the wreckage. Two people were confirmed dead at the scene. A third person was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with a fractured leg and internal injuries.
The CHP log notes that the driver of the wrong-way vehicle appeared to have been drinking. The Contra Costa County coroner was notified.
The crash shut down the freeway for hours. Caltrans was called in for a full closure, and at one point only a single lane was open on northbound 680 south of Highway 242. The roadway fully reopened around 6:30 a.m.
The crash was reported Monday morning by CBS News. The cause remains under investigation, and no names have been released.
