A 29-year-old man has died and two other people were seriously hurt after a four-vehicle pileup on Interstate 80 near Vacaville, California, early on Saturday morning.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened at about 2:35 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 near Lagoon Valley Road. A blue Hyundai Tucson overturned for an unknown reason and came to rest blocking the eastbound lanes.
The overturned car was then struck by three other vehicles: a blue BMW driven by a 20-year-old man, a white Kia sedan driven by a 60-year-old woman, and a gray Buick SUV driven by a 40-year-old man. Early highway patrol logs also noted a large truck at the scene, though it was not clear whether it struck the Hyundai.
The Hyundai driver, identified by the Solano County Coroner’s Office as Gregory Tobias, 29, died at the scene. His 29-year-old passenger was taken to hospital in critical condition, and the woman driving the Kia was taken to hospital with major injuries.
The Hyundai and the BMW were towed from the scene, and all eastbound lanes were blocked for a time while crews worked. The cause of the initial rollover is not yet known, and the crash remains under investigation. The highway patrol’s Solano office asks anyone with information about the collision to contact it.
