A Van Zandt County sheriff’s deputy was killed and a Canton police officer was injured when a suspect opened fire during a warrant service in East Texas on Tuesday night. The suspect was also found dead inside the home.
Deputies from the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office were assisting the Canton Police Department with serving a warrant around 10 p.m. on October 20, according to Fox 4 News. The officers approached a house in the 4300 block of State Highway 198, just south of Canton.
The suspect had outstanding felony warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer, officials said.
Around 10:22 p.m., the suspect fired shots from inside the home at the deputies and officers standing outside. The gunfire fatally wounded a Van Zandt County deputy and injured a Canton police officer.
Officers later found the suspect dead inside the residence from a gunshot wound.
Authorities have not released the names of the deputy, the officer, or the suspect. Law enforcement officials described the shooting as an isolated incident and said there is no continuing threat to the public.
