A 36-year-old Riverview man has been charged with attempted murder after a woman was strangled and stabbed multiple times during an argument at a home in Tampa, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators said Daniel Yerty and the woman got into a verbal argument on Wednesday at a home in the 7000 block of East 19th Avenue. The argument turned violent, and Yerty strangled the woman and stabbed her several times in the neck and hands, deputies said.

Yerty then left the scene in the woman’s vehicle, according to investigators. Deputies found the woman suffering from multiple stab wounds and rushed her to a local hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition.

While detectives were still investigating at the scene, they spotted a man matching Yerty’s description walking nearby on foot. After confirming his identity, deputies took him into custody.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said: “This domestic abuser was in handcuffs within hours of his violent attack.” He added that the sheriff’s office would never stand for such behaviour and that its Domestic Violence Unit would continue to pursue such suspects relentlessly.

Yerty faces charges of first-degree attempted murder, burglary of a dwelling with assault or battery, domestic battery by strangulation, and grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Investigators have not said what started the argument. The investigation remains ongoing.
