A 26-year-old man was shot dead on a subway platform in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday afternoon, and the gunman is still on the loose, police said.
Darell Rodriguez, from the Bronx, was waiting for a northbound E train at the 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue station when he was shot once in the chest at around 12:20 p.m., the New York Post reported, citing the NYPD.
Police said an argument broke out between two men on the platform. The dispute moved into a subway car and then back onto the platform, where the killer pulled out a gun and fired. Rodriguez was heading home from his job as a security guard at the front desk of a Manhattan building, according to sources, and lived in the University Heights section of the Bronx.
He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival just after 1 p.m.
The shooter fled the station on foot, heading north on Seventh Avenue. Police released surveillance images showing the suspect in a red tracksuit, a black vest and a face mask, carrying a backpack. Officers said the shooting appeared to be targeted and not random. No arrests have been made.
NYPD Deputy Chief Keith Shine said on Sunday that the two men had a dispute on the platform, though the details remain unclear. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS or submit tips online and on social media at @NYPDTips.
Rodriguez’s killing was the seventh murder in the New York City transit system this year and the fourth gun death, up from two over the same period in 2025, according to NYPD statistics.
