Two people, including a young boy, are dead after a shooting inside a condo on the northwest side of Indianapolis.

About 1:05 p.m. on Monday, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were sent to the Village at Eagle Creek Condominiums at 4400 Village Lane after a report of a person shot.

When officers arrived, they found a woman and a boy younger than 10 with gunshot injuries inside the condo. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Police also found a firearm at the location.

IMPD Officer Drew Brown called the deaths an unthinkable tragedy. Asked whether detectives were treating the case as a possible murder-suicide, he said investigators were looking at every possibility. He said there was no ongoing threat to the public and that a cooperative witness was helping the investigation.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office, which will decide the cause and manner of both deaths, has not released the names of the woman and the boy.

Brown said investigators wanted to learn what led up to the shooting, but it was too early to say exactly what happened. Members of the department’s wellness team were on scene to support the responding officers. Brown noted that some of the officers had also responded to a fatal double stabbing in the same district about a week earlier, and several days after that to a double shooting involving adult siblings that the coroner ruled a murder-suicide.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the IMPD homicide unit at 317-327-3475. Those who want to stay anonymous can call Crimestoppers at 317-262-8477.
