Driver killed, officer hurt in Dodge County crashes

Black and white night highway intersection scene

A 77-year-old Jefferson man was killed on Thursday morning when a semi truck ran a stop sign and struck his SUV in Dodge County, Wisconsin.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m. on State Highway 60 at County Road BB in the town of Elba, according to the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office. The semi driver, a 28-year-old Waterloo man, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The intersection stayed closed for nearly three hours while investigators worked the scene. During that closure, a second crash injured a Dodge County Sheriff’s Office community service officer who was directing traffic.

Another motorist struck the officer’s vehicle, which had its emergency lights on, pushing it into the officer. The officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The driver who caused that second crash has not been identified.

Investigators have not said whether the semi driver will face any citations or charges. The sheriff’s office said it is investigating both crashes along with the Wisconsin State Patrol.
