One person has been killed in a shooting near a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday afternoon.

Columbus police received a report of the shooting at 2:11 p.m. in the 2200 block of Albert Avenue, on the city’s Northeast Side, east of Westerville Road.

The caller told police dispatchers that a group of boys were shooting outside the Alrahma Mosque at 2205 Albert Ave. The gunfire happened a few hundred feet from the mosque building.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene by Columbus Division of Fire medics, Fire Lt. Nick Davis said. He did not give further information about other victims.

Police spokesman Sgt. James Fuqua said the shooting happened outside while a funeral was being held inside the mosque. He said the shooting was not an attack on the mosque and was not related to the funeral.

Fuqua said the shooting involved two groups of people. He could not say whether there were any other injuries or whether police were seeking any suspects, and provided no additional information.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said its Columbus agents were also responding to a reported shooting incident in the 2200 block of Albert Avenue.

The investigation is ongoing.
