Three people have died after a vehicle crashed into a highway work zone in Bastrop, Texas, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

According to the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened on State Highway 71 near Tucker Hill Lane. A vehicle travelling westbound crossed into the restricted construction area and struck two contracted construction workers.

The two workers and the driver of the vehicle were killed. Their identities have not yet been released, and officials have not said what caused the vehicle to enter the work zone.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation into the crash, which remains active.

Jordan Foster Construction later confirmed that the two workers who died were employees of the company. The Texas Department of Transportation expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged drivers to stay vigilant on the road.

The crash took place in a corridor that has seen significant construction work since October, with the wider project expected to continue through fall 2028. People who live and work nearby have raised concerns about safety for workers and about traffic patterns that keep changing along the highway.
