A shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday afternoon left two people dead and five others injured, including two police officers, authorities said.
The suspected gunman also died following the violence at an apartment complex on East Grant Street in the Loring Park neighborhood, near the Minneapolis Convention Center. Authorities had not immediately explained how the suspect died or identified a motive.
Police were sent to the building shortly after 4:30 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire and a person being shot. Officers entering the complex found victims inside and heard additional gunfire coming from an upper floor.
According to Minneapolis police, officers moved toward the source of the gunfire despite severely reduced visibility inside the building. A haze on the upper floor made it difficult for officers to see clearly as they responded.
Two officers among those injured
Two Minneapolis police officers were wounded by gunfire during the response.
One officer suffered two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and was taken to a hospital for surgery. Officials said the officer was in stable condition. Another officer was shot twice in the leg.
A third officer was also injured during the incident, although authorities said that injury was not caused by gunfire.
Four civilians suffering from gunshot wounds were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. One of those victims later died. Another person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident therefore left seven people injured or killed among civilians and officers, in addition to the death of the suspected shooter.
Investigation into possible motive
Authorities have not announced a confirmed motive for the shooting.
However, officials familiar with the early investigation said the suspected gunman had reportedly been facing eviction from the building. Investigators were examining whether that situation had any connection to the violence.
Police have not publicly established that the eviction was a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Residents caught in the middle of the violence
People living in the apartment building described a frightening scene as gunfire erupted inside the complex.
One resident said she was riding an elevator when she heard shots. She returned to her apartment and remained there until police officers helped residents leave the building.
The shooting also prompted a major police response in the surrounding downtown area. Witnesses reported seeing heavily armed officers moving toward the apartment building while emergency crews transported injured people from the scene.
The FBI also sent personnel to Minneapolis to assist local authorities with the investigation and response.
Apartment complex had previous deadly shooting
The building, formerly known as Loring Towers, has experienced deadly violence before.
Two men were fatally shot inside the apartment building in September 2025 in an incident described at the time as an ambush. The previous shooting and Wednesday’s violence have renewed attention on safety at the residential complex.
The building provides affordable housing for families in the Loring Park area.
