Two people were found shot to death at a home in northeast Indianapolis on Wednesday after police were called to check on a resident, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.
Officers were dispatched just after 1:15 p.m. to the 6500 block of Discovery Drive South, where they found a woman shot and killed in the backyard and a man dead from a gunshot wound inside the house. Several dogs were found unharmed and were taken into the care of Indianapolis Animal Care Services.
Investigators recovered a gun from the home and said they believe there is no threat to the wider community. IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said detectives are examining every possibility, but that the shooting appeared to be connected to a mental health crisis.
The man and woman have not yet been formally identified by the Marion County Coroner’s Office, and police said they have been in contact with the family. Neighbors told IndyStar they believed the two were siblings and that the woman had been seen walking her dogs the day before.
It was the second time in three days that Indianapolis police had responded to an apparent homicide linked to a mental health crisis. On Oct. 11, a 38-year-old man with a history of mental health issues was arrested on suspicion of murder after his mother and stepfather were killed at their home on Lakeshire Lane. Thompson urged anyone going through a difficult time to reach out for help, pointing to the city’s clinician-led response teams and the mobile crisis team known as MCAT. The investigation into the Discovery Drive South deaths is ongoing.
