A man suffered serious injuries early Wednesday morning after being struck by an SUV while walking in the traffic lanes of a freeway service road in Dallas, police said.

Officers responded at about 12:55 a.m. to the northbound service road in the 500 block of South R.L. Thornton Freeway, just south of 10th Street, where they found the man lying in the roadway.

Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics transported him to a local hospital. Officials said he is expected to survive.

According to preliminary details, a woman was driving an SUV northbound along the service road when she encountered the man walking directly in the lanes. She tried to brake and swerve but was unable to avoid the collision.

Police said early indications suggest pedestrian error contributed to the crash. No criminal charges against the driver are expected.
